More Ramadhan Stalls In KB This Year
By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - As Muslims embrace the Ramadhan month by refraining from eating and drinking to remind the faithful of the suffering of the less fortunate people, breaking the fast is considered a moment of joy for those who accomplish each fasting day, fulfilling one of the five pillars of Islam.

There are a number of Ramadhan stalls in Brunei-Muara area, and Belait District also has its share of Ramadhan stalls set up in various parts of the district to cater to the needs of the Muslim community there.

Since the start of the fasting month, hundreds of people could be seen flocking to the Ramadhan stalls at Tudong Saji, Kuala Belait, as early as 3pm daily to purchase food and drinks for breaking the fast.

Vehicles could also be seen lining up Jalan Setia, Kuala Belait, causing traffic jam in the area.

According to the Belait Municipal Department, there has been an increase in the number of stalls operating at Tudong Saji, Kuala Belait this year compared to last year.

Of the 177 stalls this year, 141 are for eatery items, 20 for barbequed food, four selling fruits and 12 for live flowers.

Meanwhile, at Seria Pasarneka, 78 Ramadhan stalls have been set up this year, with 59 for food vendors, four for barbequed food and four for fruit traders. The department also reminded stall operators to maintain their stalls' cleanliness and hygiene as well as the 'halalness' of food and drinks.

Ramadhan stalls are also available at other areas in the district such as Wisma Yakin Kampong Pandan, Brunei Shell Recreational Club parking lot and Soon Lee Mega Mart in Sungai Liang.

The Ramadhan month provides opportunities for stall operators to earn extra income in light of the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitiri celebration.

However, Muslims are urged to spend in moderation to reflect on the sufferings of the less fortunate people.

A series of religious events has also been organised in the district to mark the fasting month such as Terawih prayers, Tedarus sessions or the mass recital of al-Quran at mosques to complete the reading of the Holy Book.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
