Yee Hong Ben Top Student In Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan - Yee Hong Ben of Jerudong International School (JIS) emerged as the top student in Brunei Darussalam after being awarded the `National Biology Scholar' for scoring a distinction in the 2006 University of Toronto National Biology Competition.

In an interview with the Bulletin, the JIS student said he was surprised that he took home the top prize, as this was the first time that he had taken part in the competition.

He said that the competition was a big challenge, as students had to compete at the international level. However, he still managed to ace it.

Yee said that it was his teachers who encouraged him to take part in the competition. He attributed his success to the teachers who helped him prepare for the international competition.

JIS Head of Biology Dominic Briffa told the Bulletin that four or five students from JIS were selected to participate in the competition. This was not the first time that the school had taken part in this event.

This year, however, Yee did the school proud for being the only student in Brunei to win the National Biology Scholar award with distinction.

Yee is currently a first year medical student at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The results of this competition reflect an outstanding performance by Brunei's students and with more preparation and determination, better results can be achieved in the coming years.

Every year since its inception, the Canadian High Commission in the Sultanate has sponsored prizes and certificates for the competition. Questions in the University of Toronto National Biology Competition cover materials that senior high school biology students would likely come across in their academic curriculum.

The contents of the exam include general biochemistry, cell structure and processes, cell metabolism, genetics, evolution, biological diversity, plant structure and function, vertebrate structure and function, ecology, as well as other interesting biological topics. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
