Maktab Sains Hosts Awards Ceremony For Canadian Biology Competition

Bandar Seri Begawan - An awards ceremony for the 2006 University of Toronto National Biology Competition was held at Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (MSPSBS) yesterday.

The guest of honour was Cikgu Hjh Aishah binti Hj Mohd Hussein, Director of Curriculum Development Department, Ministry of Education. Also present was Mr Leopold Battel, the Canadian high commissioner designate.

MSPSBS Principal Cikgu Pg Sarah binti Pg Hj Kamaluddin congratulated the winners and thanked the Canadian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam for sponsoring certificates and prizes for the fourth time this year.

The principal of MSPSBS said that this was the fifth year that the science college has hosted the awards ceremony. The competition, which was held on April 27, was participated by 193 students from seven schools in the Sultanate.

MSPSBS received a plaque for having the most number of students in this year's competition. The guest of honour presented the plaque to Pg Anak Hjh Nurul Amal Ni'matullah Athirah who was representing the science college.

The `National Biology Scholar' award went to Yee Hong Ben of Jerudong International School who scored a distinction in the biology competition.

In the top five ranking for Upper Sixth Level were Kelvin Wong Wee Chin and Najmuddin Hi Tarif, both from MSPSBS; Juwairiyah Jali of Maktab Duli; and two students from SM SayyidinaAli, Chai ShiauYinn and Tan Jun Seng.

In the top five ranking for Lower Sixth Level were students from MSPSBS namely Yazmyn Hashim, Adibah Yussof, Yazid Yussof, Adiazizi Hj Mahdi and Lim Shin Ling.

Participating in such international competitions is areal challenge, as students are able to see where they stand in comparison to participants from other countries, the principal of MSPSBS said.

At present, the University of Toronto National Biology Competition is the only one of its kind in the world. Its main purpose is to challenge students and to provide entrance scholarships to the University of Toronto.

The schools that took part in this year's competition were MSPSBS, Sekolah Menengah Arab Lelaki Hassanal Bolkiah, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Othman, Tutong, Jerudong International School, Maktab Duli- Pengiran Muda AlMuhtadee Billah and Pusat Tingkatan Enam Berakas.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
