Bandar Seri
Begawan - Officers from the Food Control for Halal Food
Division of the Syariah Affairs Department began their first round
inspections yesterday to ensure that me food sold to Muslims at all
Ramadhan food stalls are ail Halal.
Coming under scrutiny yesterday were
the popular Gadong Ramadhan market (Gerai Ramadhan Gadong) and stalls
at the National Stadium area in Berakas.
At the Gadong market, inspections
were carried out on some 50 food stalls. The division had earlier
yesterday asked for the cooperation of vendors to assist in the
matter.
The vendors were also told to keep
documents such as receipts of their purchases with them at the market,
so that the Halal inspectors could examine them and ensure that every
facet of the food sold at their stalls are Halal, especially meat
which must comply with the `Brunei Halal' certification and purchased
from recognised sources, an officer told the Bulletin.
A team of 12 officers were involved
in the Gadong market inspections, led by Hj Hamdani Osman.
According to one of the officers,
experienced inspectors usually could tell whether the meat sold was
local or not.
And if they suspected the meat to be
imported or dubious, the officers would carry out a further
investigation that - usually involved tailing the vendors to ascertain
the true origins of the meat.
According to Hj Hamdani, the
inspection is an annual activity conducted to ensure the `Halalness'
of food sold during the holy month of Ramadhan.
The officers yesterday said they were
satisfied with their inspection, which showed that vendors are truly
complying and cooperating.
The Ramadhan stalls at the National
Stadium were meanwhile inspected by a team of 15 officers from the
same division, led by Pg Hj Adnan Hj Momin, Religious Enforcement
Officer at the Food Control For Halal Food Division.
During the operation, several stall
operators were interviewed on the nature and origin of the meat used,
and was asked to produce purchase receipts for the meat and poultry.
Pg Hj Adnan later said they were
satisfied with the inspections at the National Stadium. He added that
the vendors were abiding by the rules set by the Food Control For
Halal Food Division of the Syariah Affairs Department.
Meanwhile the sivision stated it
would be carrying out more inspections throughout the holy month of
Ramadhan. -- Courtesy of Borneo
