Brunei Takes Part In Asean
Disaster Drill

Begawan - Brunei Darussalam has sent six special squad members
with water rescue equipment to take part in a major regional Disaster
Emergency Response simulation exercise, which culminates today with
search and rescue, and relief operations in Kein Svay District and
Takhmau City of Kandal Province, eight kilometres south of Phnom Penh.
The Asean Regional Disaster Emergency
Response Simulation Exercise (ARDEX-06) began on Sept 22 and was
elevated to a disaster emergency on Sept 25, where regional and
international assistance was sought by Cambodia, according to a press
release from the Asean Secretariat.
The search and rescue, and relief
operations will be performed along the Tonle Bassac River. Ten
disaster simulation events will be performed during the exercise.
These include rescue of drowning victims and their personal
properties, rescue of stranded victims from rooftops, evacuation of
affected communities to a safer area, helicopter and 911 rescue,
sandbagging, setting up of mobile shelters, and medical team triage
and treatment of victims.
The half-day event will be presided
over by Mr Tea Banh, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
National Defence of Cambodia, on behalf of Prime Minister S amdech Hun
Sen.
ARDEX-06 is the second of a series of
annual disaster simulation exercise, which Asean conducts annually to
enhance the capacities and capabilities of member countries in joint
emergency operations guided by the Asean Agreement on Disaster
Management and Emergency Response. The first simulation exercise was
