India Marks 60th Independence Day
By Jon Tampoi

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 60th Independence Day of India was celebrated in Brunei with pomp and grandeur featuring Indian hospitality, friendliness and colourful cultural performances.

Held last night at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, the celebration was organised by the Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association (BSBIA).

The chief guest at the function was the Acting Indian High Commissioner of India Mr M P Singh. Mr Singh in his speech said that in a foreign land, everyone is a representative of the country that they originate from.

"Interaction with foreigners creates an image of India based on demeanor. It is the duty of each national to ensure that a positive image is presented through action and behaviour," he said.

The Indian High Comissioner also highlighted the seven points of the oath as mentioned by the Indian President to the youth on August 14, 2006. The seven points are namely to set goal in life, work with courage to succeed, keep the home, surrounding, neighbourhood and environment clean and tidy, to preserve righteousness in heart, to lead an honest life free of corruption, to light up the lamp of knowledge and to do the best in realising the 2020 mission of development.

The BSBIA has over the years persisted with its efforts to not only celebrate the Independence Day of India but also to provide opportunities to the younger generations to learn about India's rich cultural diversity and ethos.

The evening's entertainment featured a variety of sights and sounds of Indian culture, with performances relying completely on local talents and resources that enthralled the audience.

Among the cultures showcased in the performances were West Bengali, Hindi, Tamil Nadu and Malayalam cultures. Complementing the evening was an excellent authentic India cuisine.
