Ramadhan In The Air
By Azaraimy HH & Zaim Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Twelve cannon shots were fired yesterday afternoon at
the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital by the
Military Police Support Service of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, to
usher in the holy month of Ramadhan.
And at dusk at the Gadong Night
Market soon after the Maghrib prayers, there were more customers than
usual. Operators were seen busier and parking has gotten more
competitive.
It was just a day before the first
day of Ramadhan but activities more than doubled.
At Gadong Night Market, an operator
said he is preparing more varieties to meet what he sensed as double
the demand this year. He said families usually cook on their own in
the first few days but then make a daily beeline to their favourite
food market.
Islam encourages moderation but it is
not unusual for people to feast during the break of fast, which as
they say, is breakfast, lunch and dinner in one-go.
Ramadhan
has always meant rich pickings for night market operators and some
enterprising households. -- Courtesy of Borneo
