Prince Presents Medals To Winners
By Dannie Abu Basrah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Two Brunei athletes involved in the 23rd Manila SEA
Games last year were awarded medals yesterday as they were upgraded
from bronze to silver in their respective events after previous
winners were disqualified.
The two athletes were Farrahwaheeda
binti Haji Bujang, who previously won bronze medal in the Taekwando
bantamweight category as the previous gold medallist was disqualified.
The second recipient was Tong Kit
Siong who initially won the bronze medal in the Karate-do Individual
Kumite category as the former silver medal winner was disqualified.
Presenting the medals to the two
athletes was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, the
President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council at the
Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Also present at the ceremony was the
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Major General (Rtd) Dato
Haji Mohammad and the Permanent Secretary, Dato Paduka Haji Jemat.
Early this year a meeting of the SEGF
Council (SEA Games Federation Council) was held to finalise all
matters concerning the 23rd SEA Games hosted by the Philippines in
2005.
The meeting was attended by all
member countries in South East Asia.
At the meeting it was decided to
officially disqualify certain medal winners as they had committed some
rule violations and so to readjust the medal winners in the affected
sports.
Based on that decision two Brunei
Darussalam medal winners have been up-graded in their medal positions
in their respective sports. -- Courtesy of Borneo
