Handbag Thief Faces Sentencing On Saturday

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Filipino man who stole a local woman's handbag containing $4,000 cash from Gadong night market three days ago will receive his sentence on Saturday after he pleaded guilty to the charge before the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Fernando Nunez who is in Brunei Darussalam on a visitor's pass committed the offence with-two others who are still at large, the court heard. The defendant who is divorced from his wife and has three children from the marriage came to Brunei Darussalam on September 18, 2006 from Sabah.

They were at The Mall, Gadong before they proceeded to the night market nearby. At the night market, they saw a stall selling clothes where they saw a handbag lying on a table and decided to steal it.

The defendant approached the woman who was at the stall and spoke to her while the two others, still at large, stole the bag and ran away with it.

As they ran away, a man chased after the defendant, who was caught, while the two others managed to escape, the court was told. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Hafizah binti Ahmad prosecuted. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
