Promoting Malay Literature
By P Marilyn
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In implementing its vision and mission, the Ministry
of Culture, Youth and Sports will always continue giving its support
to activities that lead to the development of youth, culture sports
and the community.
This was stated by Pehin Major
General (Rtd) Awang Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud. Minister of Culture,
Youth and Sports, during the launching of the `Pantaran Sastera'
project in Kg Tanjong Maya, Tutong.
The mini library called 'Lamin
Sastera', which belongs to Hj Moksin bin Hj Abd Kadir, was chosen as
the launching pad for the programme.
The long-term project by the Language
and Literature Bureau (DBP) is aimed at enhancing its relationships
with literature clubs and writers, locally or abroad, and also
developing further the importance of literature in the country.
In his speech, the minister applauded
the efforts by DBP in spearheading the development of Malay language,
the official language of the country, through activities across the
four districts.
He hoped that the bureau would, from
time to time, donate its newest books or publications to the mini
library since it can help invigorate the minds of the youth in the
district to be more active in writing.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and
Sports has also recently donated books during a visit to the Mandaram
Longhouse in Labi. The minister said the distribution of books is also
one of the efforts in strengthening the use of Malay language. The
initiative will also be spread to other longhouses, he added.
Meanwhile in a speech by Dr Mataim
bin Bakar, Director of Language and Literature Bureau, he said the
project provides a chance to the literary community in voicing out
anything that is related to the Malay literature that might help
improve and develop it.
It is possible that the project might
spread to Limbang, Labuan and Lawas, said the director.
He added that DBP would provide
assistance to writers in the country by setting up a special corner or
room at its building in Berakas with facilities that might help them
in their writing. -- Courtesy of Borneo
