For Filipinos
By Tony Alabastro
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Immigration Department and Royal Brunei Police Force
personnel will give a talk on Brunei immigration laws and police
matters for overseas Filipino workers (OFW’s) at the Philippine
Embassy tomorrow afternoon (Sept 17) from 1pm to 4pm.
The event is part of the two-Sunday
basic orientation course- with the aim of enhancing the knowledge and
understanding of overseas Filipino workers on Immigration regulations
and other laws of the Sultanate, said the Philippine Ambassador td
Brunei, Ms Virginia H Benavidez.
The invited speakers for the talk are
Muhsin bin Hj Ahmad, senior chief Immigration officer; PgAbdul Rahman
bin Pg Yassin, senior Immigration officer; Mohare Fandi bin Hj Tahir,
senior Immigration officer and prosecuting officer; and DSP Pg Hj
Mohammad bin Pg Hj Metali from the Commissioner Secretariat's Office,
Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), according to Nurul Hernandez, OWWA
officer at the Philippine Embassy.
The RBPF's responses to the economic,
social, political and security issues relating to Brunei laws and the
order of peace and stability as well as the general welfare and safety
of the people are among the topics to be discussed, she said.
"We are inviting all OFWs to grab
this opportunity to attend the orientation course," Hernandez said.
Last Sunday, Assistant Commissioner
of Labour, Shariful Bahri Sawas, and Senior
Labour
Inspector, Rosli Mat Noor, gave a talk on the provisions of the Labour
Act 1954.
Foreign workers can come to the
Labour Office on the 5th Floor of the Immigration building, or write
letters to the Philippine Embassy or the Labour Office, or call the
Labour hotline at 2381-848, if they want clarification on employment
issues or make a complaint, the speakers said.
Workers can also lodge a report with
the nearest police station before filing a complaint at the Labour
Office, they added. Complainants are also encouraged to file their
reports early, when chances of resolving the issue will be greater,
they said.
A noted private practitioner, Saljit
Singh Sandhu, talked on Workmen's Compensation Act, which covers any
person who has entered into a contract of employment, written or oral,
labourer or not, whether paid hourly, or based on work done, or paid
weekly or monthly.
He said according to the Act, an
employer has a liability for compensation when the workman suffers
injury by accident, arising out of and in the course of employment.
The basic orientation course would be
very beneficial for OFWs in upgrading their knowledge with the whole
spectrum of the prevailing rules and regulations as well as their
rights, privileges and services, in connection with their employment
in Brunei, Ambassador Benavidez said.
Overseas Filipino workers who are
interested to attend the orientation course may get in touch with the
Philippine Embassy at 2236981, 2237052 or 2237053. -- Courtesy of Borneo
