Brunei Grand Sale Returns For The 12th Time
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 12th Brunei Grand Sale (BGS) 2006 was yesterday launched at the Bumiputra Trade and Commercial Centre in the capital.

On hand to officiate the launch was Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office Dato Hj Kamis bin Hj Tamin, who was present as the guest of honour.

The permanent secretary, in his welcoming speech, said the 45-day grand sale has in the past provided heightened level of competitiveness and openness among the business community.

During the period, businesses gain much needed knowledge on the local market from the assessments of customers, which is not unlike the trust being placed on the pricing and quality of goods being offered, he added.

The guest of honour also believed that businessmen recognise customers as sophisticated shoppers with varying tastes and in-depth knowledge on the products and services available. Therefore, as businessmen, they have to operate comprehensively to ensure proper pricing and top quality customer services.

The permanent secretary also said, "Brunei Darussalam has a Price Control Act which enforces products displayed for sale to be accompanied by clear price tags that are visible to customers."

He warned that His Majesty's Government takes the issue of price control very seriously, especially during sales such as the Brunei Grand Sale, adding that the regulation will continue to be enforced by the Economic Planning and Development Department (JPKE).

Meanwhile, JPKE deputy director general Awang Hj Razali bin Hj Mohd Yussof said that the main objectives of the grand sale are to improve the local business climate and to discourage locals from shopping overseas.

He also reminded BGS participants to abide to the regulations of the sale put in place by the JPKE, and hoped that the public will continue to support the event.

In conjunction with the BGS launch, a fair was held at the Bumiputra Trade and Commercial Centre featuring a wide array of local products.

According to Awang Hj Mohd Salleh bin Hj Hidup of Seri Pekatan Sdn Bhd, who is participating in the fair, it serves as an advertising tool for hisbusiness by providing the company with exposure in local as well as foreign markets. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
