Low-Key-Start- Awaiting Payday
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - First day of the 12th Brunei Grand Sale saw a
lacklustre start as locals opted to wait for their next pay cheques at
the end of this month before rushing to shop for the upcoming Hari
Raya Aidil Fitri festivities.
A number of shop owners reported slow
businesses but are confident their businesses would pick up in two
weeks. The 45-day sale is an effort to encourage locals to shop at
home and to stimulate the economic activities.
Locals had always made a beeline to
border towns, such as Miri and Limbang, during weekends and amid
festivities.
According to observers, by doing
their shopping locally, Bruneians are actually helping to ensure the
nation sustain a buoyant economy and to reverse the outflow of money.
Some establishments have adopted
various business strategies to entice shoppers such as further
discounts, purchases on purchases, free gifts, one-day promotions,
crazy sales, lucky draw and points systems on top of rock-bottom
prices. -- Courtesy of Borneo
