By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A permanent resident was fined $1,250 after he pleaded guilty to possessing undeclared booze and cigarettes before the Bandar Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Chen Weng Khiong, 56, was tailed by Customs Preventive personnel from Kuala Lurah to Jalan Batang Mitus on August 24 following a tip-off.

After Chen had dropped two of his friends off at a bus stop, he was stopped by Customs Preventive officers at Jalan Batang Mitus, the court was told.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, officers found 24 cans of Tiger beer, four bottles of liquor and two cartons of cigarettes. All the goods were not declared under the defendant's name.

The court was also told that the goods were not declared under the names of Chen's two friends who had been dropped off at the bus stop.

The court ordered for the defendant's vehicle to be returned, while the goods will be destroyed. Chen paid the fine. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
