By Azaraimy HH

Bandar Seri Begawan - The recent introduction of the electronic payment gateway by Baiduri Bank in Brunei Darussalam would provide better customer services and new experiences.

Subsequently, this effort will contribute towards the government objective to encourage more private sector participation in the e-commerce activity.

This was stated by the Minister of Communication Pehin Dato Hj Awang Abu Bakar bin Haj i Apong during the launching of Europay Master Visa (EMV) yesterday.

He is confident that many customers will look forward to the many possibilities that the card may bring. There is a possibility of combining the radio frequency technology and the smart card technology that will provide customers while purchasing goods such as in supermarkets to have instantaneous pricing at checkout counter and faster payment settlement process.

"It is my sincere hope that the EMV - project will receive all the cooperation that you need from both your customers and the merchants in order to have smooth migration from cards that use magnetic strip to smart card technology", he said.

He hoped other banks and financial institutions in this country would also consider introducing new ICT technology as a way to enhance payment security, and to encourage online shopping and payment.

"Baiduri Bank is one of the leaders in bringing cutting-edge technology to the forefront of our country. I sincerely hope more consumers and merchants will welcome and appreciate the advantages offered by this chip-imbedded innovation and upgrade their magnetic strip cards".

Meanwhile, in line with the Authority for Info-Communication Technology Industry's (AiTi') task to develop ebusiness in Brunei Darussalam, the Ministry of Communications will move forward e-commerce in this country in three ways, the minister said.

First a sector by sector approach starting with transport and communications. Second by building up the success of these sectors before moving onto the next stage. And third by encouraging private sector involvement in the development of e-business while AiTi remains as a facilitator.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
