Record Zakat And Fitrah Collection

Begawan - In less than two weeks' time, Muslims in Brunei and
all over the world will mark the holy month of Ramadhan by fasting
from dawn to dusk for a month.
During the fasting month, Muslims are
encouraged to pay their zakat while fitrah is an obligation during the
month of Ramadhan. And statistics from the Ministry of Religious
Affairs show that Muslims in Brunei have been generous in paying their
zakat and fitrah.
The amount of tithe collected last
year shows a steep rise. In 2005, Bruneian Muslims paid zakat to the
tune of $18,956,006.76 compared to $13,477,755.02 in 2004.
Fitrah,
too, shows a rise with $780,789.97 collected last year compared to
$765,399.78 in 2004.
Meanwhile, the number of people who
paid zakat and fitrah has also increased. 4,112 people paid zakat in
2004 and 274,367 paid fitrah compared to 4,569 and 281,504
respectively in 2005.
Tithe collections this year will be
conducted by 283 appointed amils in 134 areas-25 amils appointed-in
four areas in the Islamic Religious Council Department, 160 in 76
areas in Brunei Muara District, 23 in 13 areas in Belait District, 58
in 30 areas in Tutong District and 17 in Temburong.
The number of amils this year has
