'Disaster' Averted In Emergency Drill
By Hj Minor Absah

Bandar Seri Begawan - The relevant authorities averted a 'disaster' when a trailer fully laden with hundreds of gas cylinders caught fire yesterday morning. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished by personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department.

This was actually a mock exercise drill codenamed "Katak 06" that took place at Km 6 of the Muara Tutong Highway. It was organised by Brunei Shell Marketing to test the response time of relevant agencies in handling the situation.

In the scenario, a trailer belonging to ZAS CO LPG was on its way back from Muara Central Store after picking up 504 gas cylinders.

Along the way the driver noticed that there was thick smoke coming from the back of the trailer. He immediately slowed down to stop and tried to extinguish the fire using a nine-kilogramme dry chemical fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful. The Fire and Rescue Department and other agencies were then notified.

Among other things, the drill was to test the communication link and response time between the relevant authorities such as the Fire and Rescue Services, Police, BSM ECC team and ZAS Co Sdn Bhd management.

The drill was also to test the management and control of information when informing the public about the situation. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
