Roadblock
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - An attempt by a Malaysian man to smuggle 12 gallons
of fuel failed when he was arrested at a roadblock conducted jointly
by police personnel and enforcement officers from Halal Food
Controlled Section, Department of Syariah Affairs in Temburong
District.
According to police, the fuel was
allegedly going to be smuggled across the border to Limbang. During
the roadblock, enforcement personnel also arrested two locals. One was
detained for bringing in dubious chicken meat, while the other was
arrested for bringing in 607 pieces of banned turtle eggs.
The man reportedly brought the turtle
eggs from the neighbouring state of Lawas, Sabah, to be smuggled to
Temburong District and Bandar.
All items were confiscated and the
cases were handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for
further investigation.
The roadblock was held at two
different locations in the district, along Jalan Labu and Kg Ujong
Jalan. The aim of the operation was to prevent the importation and
smuggling of banned goods such as dubious meat into the country in
line with the upcoming month of Ramadhan.
Sgt 1166 Amah Anak Tongit, who led
the operation, said a total of 18 personnel comprising police and
religious enforcement officers took part in the roadblock, which began
at 4pm and ended at 10pm, the same time the ferry service ends. The
ferry service operates between Temburong District and Limbang. -- Courtesy of Borneo
