Mosque Break-In Caught On Camera

Begawan - A man who ransacked Kampong Pandan Mosque Belait in
an attempt to steal donations was caught on the mosque's surveillance
video camera, which led to the swift arrest of the suspect.
The suspect, a 28-year-old
shopkeeper, admitted trying to force open a metal donation box, which
he thought contained some money. But he left the mosque empty-handed
as there was nothing to steal.
According to a police report on
Tuesday, between lam to 4am, the suspect allegedly broke into the
mosque and ransacked the office. The suspect, a permanent resident,
smashed the mosque's sliding glass window to enter the mosque.
The broken window was noticed by the
mosque's imam when he was about to perform the Suboh prayers. When he
went into the office, he found items scattered on the floor and one of
the display cabinets had been knocked over.
The imam reported the break-in to the
Belait police station. The mosque's trophies displayed inside the
display cabinet were damaged. Also damaged was the donation box, which
the, suspect attempted to force open through the hole where people
inserted cash donations.
Although nothing was reported stolen,
the suspect had caused damage and will face charges under Section 427
of the Penal Code for committing mischief, which carries a minimum of
two strokes of the cane and jail term.
The surveillance camera in the mosque
had greatly assisted the police in identifying the suspect, who was
