Grand Sale Aims To Stabilise
Prices Of Goods
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Grand Sale beginning Friday is seen as a
contributor to the stabilisation of .prices especially for consumer
goods. Stable prices are a "healthy" economic indicator that can
encourage other economic activities to develop, which is productive in
the long run.
A press conference on the Brunei
Grand Sale was chaired by Haji Razali Bin Hj Mohd Yussof, Deputy
Director General of Economic Planning and Development Department, and
Haji Razak Bin Hj Angas, Assistant Director of Implementation and
Monitoring.
Revenue from the Wholesale and Retail
Sector has shown an increase of more than five per cent since 2000 and
has doubled in 2004. The Wholesale and Retail Trade Sector is one of
the main contributors to the Gross Domestic Product of the country
after the Oil and Gas Sector. For 2004, the sector has contributed
nearly eight percent to the country's GDP which is considered big for
a non-oil and gas sector.
The objectives of the BGS is to
encourage the public, in particular citizens and residents, to spend
locally, provide opportunity for the public to shop at discounted
prices, encourage competitive pricing of goods and attract tourists to
shop in Brunei Darussalam.
As a prelude to the actual BGS 2006,
a month of PreBGS Special Textile Sale, participated by more than 50
outlets, has been going on since August 25. They will also participate
in the actual BGS 2006.
BGS 2006 participants are required to
display BGS banner at their business premises. BGS participation
certificates issued by JPKE are to be displayed clearly for the
benefit of the shoppers to identify BGS 2006 participants.
Shops, supermarkets and departmental
stores who do not display the BGS participation certificates are
considered non-BGS participants and the public is advised to report to
JPKE any such incident. Each item on sale will have two price tags
showing the price before and after discount.
All department stores are encouraged
to offer special sale or promotion such as `lucky draws', `crazy
sales', `happy hour' sales and others throughout the BGS period
particularly during the weekends to attract shoppers.
The launching ceremony is expected to
be officiated by Dato Paduka Awang Haji Kamis bin Haji Tamin,
Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office,
Speaking on the impact of the BGS
2006, Haji Razali said that sales is expected to increase during the
period between 20-30 per cent. -- Courtesy of Borneo
