By Kartika Rahman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The two-day SME Partnership Programme by Asia Inc, at the Empire Hotel and Country Club, entitled "Brunei: A Leap into the Future of Marketing Communications", came to an end yesterday.

Over 30 business representatives took part in the programme, which was conducted by the Regional Senior Account Manager (Asia Pacific) of Young and Rubicam, Wempy Dyocta Koto.

The goal of the gathering was to offer a practitioner's vantage of the global, regional and local dynamics of marketing to local entrepreneurs as well as business and political leaders.

"The seismic shift engineered by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, to migrate economic dependence from crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied gas to an intelligencebased economy places pressure on Bruneians to expand the private sector and diversify their professional skills," Koto said during proceedings.

Central to this national vision is an understanding of the catalytic role that the marketing communications industry plays in private sector innovation and expansion, he added.

"The programme comprehensively discussed marketing, and triggering the innovation of many marketing gimmicks that we can apply ... international perspectives were also brought in, and adopted to (suit) the local scene," said a participant.

Retailer Lenny Rahman added, "It was excellent, practical and presented in a manner that a person without a business background could easily understand. As a retailer, I've applied some to the techniques that were discussed."

A multi-industry businessman Pg Mohd Isman Hisham bin Pg Hj Othman noted: "I feel that a lot of new techniques were touched on ... effective marketing communication strategies aren't that costly."
