BSP launches 3rd Safety Week and exhibition
By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - In its effort to enforce the importance of safety, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) yesterday morning launched its Third Safety Week

The event was officiated by Dr Grahaeme Henderson, BSP Managing Director, who has led a robust safety programme for BSP employees and contractors.

During the launching of the Third Safety Week and the opening of a "Workshop Safety" exhibition yesterday, Dr Henderson stressed on the importance of safety worldwide.

He said the Safety Week has three main objectives, "Firstly, to raise awareness on the importance of safety; secondly, to improve understanding of safe working; and finally, to achieve further improvements in safety performance.

"The focused areas for this Third Safety Week in 2006 are accountability, seat belt compliance and workshop safety.

"On accountability, each individual worker must demonstrate compliance - sticking to the rules no matter what; intervention - when you see something unsafe, stop it from happening; and attitude - showing care for your fellow workers.

Dr Henderson also highlighted that workshops are often the forgotten areas, and in BSP and for its contractors, there has been a huge drive last year to raise the safety standards at workshops.

On the opening of an exhibition on "Workshop Safety" involving BSP and its contractors, Dr Henderson said: "It is great to have this exhibition on workshop safety. Many people have been involved in putting this together, and I would like to thank BSP staff and contractors for this great effort."

The exhibition showcases safe practices for employees. Some of the themes are unsafe hand tools, pressure testing, gas cylinders and cutting equipment, gas chiller maintenance, blasting and painting, electrical tools, welding and hot cutting, radiography and video clips on workshop safety.

The exhibition is organised by BSP's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). Department and the participating contractors, namely Mashhor Group, Schlumberger, Brunox, Zainal Daud, Sahid, Adinin, SKS/SKSW, Megamas, Riyan Cameron, PTAS, CIC, Baker Petrolite, Menang Group, Megalift and Halliburton.

There are also inspections being organised at the contractors' workshops and a seat belt intervention programme at the contractors' offices, which are conducted by senior personnel of BSP. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
