By Rol Ezam & Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Supermarket manager was slapped with a fine of B$3,000, or one-month imprisonment in default, by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to employing an immigration offender.

Jamal Abdul Azeez Anwardeen admitted to employing Dwi Astutik, 29, to work at Ajmir supermarket as a sales assistant.

The Immigration Prosecuting Officer said the Indonesian woman was illegally employed by the defendant who was actually under the sponsorship of a local man to work as an amah.

The court heard that the Indonesian woman was caught working at the supermarket by a team of Immigration personnel from the Enforcement Section who went to the supermarket located at Bangunan Al-Barakah in Kampong Sengkurong on June 7 this year after receiving a public complaint.

The woman was found working at the supermarket since May 30 this year and received a salary of $250 per month. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
