By Rol Ezam & Malai FadleyRizal
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A pair of twin brothers were fined while their
sister-in-law was jailed after they all pleaded guilty to theft before
the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Rosinah
bte Awg Othman admitted to stealing a purse from a patient at Ward 7
in RIPAS Hospital sometime around 10pm on April 6, last year.
The purse reportedly contained
identity cards, a bank ATM card, and keys. The twin brothers, Hardani
bin Awg Kifli and Mardani bin Awg Kifli each face a fine of B$2,400 or
eight months' jail in default.
Rosinah
and the twins admitted to four counts of stealing money from the
patient through her personal bank account from an ATM Kiosk in the
capital on April 7, 2005.
DPP
Christopher Ng told the court that Rosinah surveyed the hospital ward
first and stole the purse while the victim was sleeping and fled the
scene with Mardani who had been waiting in a getaway vehicle.
They had a discussion among
themselves on how to use the ATM card and later decided to find
Hardani and arrange to meet up with him so he could help them with
their scheme, the court was told.
At about 11.30pm, they met up at the
Kianggeh riverbank and proceeded to the bank ATM Kiosk. All the
defendants, except Mardani who waited in the vehicle, went to the
Kiosk and managed to figure out the ATM pin number of the victim by
punching in the first four numbers of the victim's identity card
number, the court heard.
They made three withdrawals of $500
cash and one withdrawal of $200. The victim only realised that her
purse was missing when she woke up at 2am on April 7, 2005, and
reported the case at lam. Rosinah has a previous conviction while the
twins are first offenders. -- Courtesy of Borneo
