Brunei Cooks Up A Treat

Begawan - Brunei Darussalam struck gold and silver in the
Cookery .vent of the 6th Asean Skills competition, displaying the best
result so far in the tightly contested skills competition among Asean
member countries since the Sultanate's first participation in 2001.
Brunei's Dk Yani Mariana Pg Yahya was
able to secure gold medal with 541 points, while Dyg Sharmita bte
Junyang scored a total of 535 to bag the silver.
Another silver in the Cookery event
went to Mr Ta Trung Giang of Vietnam.
In an interview soon after receiving
the gold medal, 21year-old Dk Yani Mariana said that when she was a
child, the kitchen had never really been her place, and that she was
surprised with her win.
"I wasn't really confident of winning
any medal, but I put out my best in the tasks I had set out to do at
the competition", she told the Bulletin.
"I think I owe much of my success at
the 6th ASC to my two instructors, Mr Navin and Cikgu Fatmah, and also
to Royal Brunei Catering for pushing me to take up a competition at
the national level, which then led to my nomination to compete in the
6th ASC," she added.
Dk Yani Mariana is currently working
as Cook 2 at Royal Brunei Catering at the Brunei International
Airport.
"I don't really know which were my
best dishes at the competition, but I was really satisfied with the
pastry that I did ... they were really nice," she said when the
Bulletin asked which were her best dishes throughout the threeday
competition.
According to Dk Yani Mariana, the
person who encouraged her to take up Cookery was her mum.
The results were announced following
the closing and prize presentation ceremony for the 6m Asean Skills
Competition which took place at The Rizqun International Hotel in
Gadong yesterday evening.
The guest of honour who presented the
medals and souvenirs was Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abdul Rahman,
the Minister of Education.
The other medal winners at the 6th
Asean Skills Competition are as follows:
Bricklaying: Eko Irawanto of
Indonesia (gold), Nirut Mingmitmee of Thailand (silver), Nguyen Dang
Hung of Vietnam (bronze) andAgung Widodo of Indonesia (bronze).
Cabinet Making: Ha Due Truong and Dao
Van Huan of Vietnam and Asbai of Indonesia (one gold each).
CADD: Huynh Huu Du and Phan Minh
Vuang of Vietnam (one gold each), Ahmad Anan bin Kamarudin of Malaysia
(bronze) and Surachai Pongampai of Thailand (bronze).
Commercial Wiring: Meor Aziszan bin
Mohd Arbee of Malaysia (gold), Kronkit Saeko of Thailand (gold), and
Tran Hoang Ro of Vietnam (bronze).
Electronic Applications: Nguyen Van
Dung and Hoang Minh Tuan of Vietnam (one gold each) and Phanupol
Pheungjai of Thailand (bronze).
Information Technology: Andreas
Kurniawan (gold) and Hendry Yanuar of Indonesia (silver), and Huynh Co
Tai and Nguyen Duy Tuyen of Vietnam (one bronze each).
Restaurant Service: Dhalya Litad Baru
of Malaysia (gold), I Wayan Perdi Erawan of Indonesia (silver) and Ms
Nyugen Thi Huyen Trang of Vietnam (silver).
Ladies Dressmaking: Ms Nelly Sophia
Talan of Indonesia (gold), Yap Chin Yan of Malaysia (gold) and Ms Nipa
Najai of Thailand (bronze).
Plumbing: A-phisit Sitthikan and
Peerapol Sripetch of Thailand (one gold each), Mohamad Zaidi bin
Sharifuddin and Mohd Affendy bin Azman of Malaysia and I Made Rais
Arsa of Indonesia (one bronze each).
Welding: Taweesuk Aeamphong and
Trirat Buasuk of Thailand (one gold each) and Muhazemir bin Kamarudin
and Zuhaili bin Othman of Malaysia (one bronze each).
After the presentation of souvenir to
each head of delegates at the competition, the guest of honour handed
over the Asean Skills competition flag to the representative of
Malaysia, the host of the next competition in 2008.

Mohammad Bin Pengiran Hj Abdul Rahman, Deputy Minister of Education
and Hj Mohd Daud Bin Hj Mahmud, Chairman of the organising committee
