Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah Urges
Assessment Of Best Athletes

Begawan - His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, the
President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, in a
sabda, said that the evaluation and selection of athletes should be
done professionally by assessing only the best athletes, reported RTB.
His Royal Highness made the sabda at
a meeting between the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Committee of
Evaluation and Selection for Sports and contingents to international
and regional levels competitions.
On arrival at the Hassanal Bolkiah
National Stadium in Berakas, His Royal Highness was greeted by the
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato
Paduka Awang Haji Jemat and the Secretary of the Brunei Darussalam
National Olympic Council, Awang Haji Japar bin Bangkol.
A Doa Selamat preceded the meeting.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah in his sabda also
recalled the performance of the country's athletes at the Asian Games
in 1994 in which several bronze medals were attained. His Royal
Highness however believed if the selection of athletes for such games
is done by focusing on their latest achievements, it is not impossible
that the country could improve on the record of past achievements.
His Royal Highness said although the
number of athletes participating in the upcoming 15th Asia Games is
relatively small, the bottom line is they have the capability of
maintaining the good image of Brunei Darussalam overseas. His Royal
Highness also advised recommended sports trainers to provide and
implement suitable training programmes. The meeting continued with
reports from the Deputy Chairman of the National Committee of
evaluation and selection for sports and contingents to the
international and regional level championships for the participation
of Brunei Darussalam to the 151'' Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, Awang
Haji Zamri bin Dato Paduka Haj i Hamdani.
The meeting was to deliberate
preparations implemented in the evaluation and selection of athletes
and contingents to the Asian Games to be held from the December 1 to
15 this year. Brunei's contingent will compete in three events; namely
Que Sports, Ten Pin Bowling and Karate-do. -- Courtesy of Borneo
