Brunei Imports $40 Million Worth
Drugs
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei imported more than $40 million worth of drugs
and pharmaceutical products during 2005 and this year.
The Ministry of Health Pharmaceutical
Chemist, Dayang Asma Atiyah said this during a briefing at a roadshow
held at the Civil Service Institute in Gadong yesterday.
Dayang
Asma Atiyah focused on the importance of taking drugs only as
prescribed by doctors and in storing them properly.
Drugs overdose can cause internal
organ disorders and sometimes even death, she warned.
Children are most prone to overdosing
therefore drugs must be kept locked and inaccessible to children.
Drugs should also be kept away from
heat and humidity to prevent spoiling. Spoilt drugs are unusable hence
wasted.
This will in turn cause pharmacies to
run low on supplies and the government will have to spend more on
importing drugs. Optimal service in hospitals and clinics will not be
achieved thus lowering the nation's health.
