Minister Leads World Heart Day Walkathon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Minister of Health Pehin Dato Awg Hj Suyoi Hj Osman launched World Heart Day 2006 and led a 1.7-kilometre walk around the capital yesterday.

The chief guest and 600 participants performed aerobics warm-up exercises before the walkathon startedat the Taman Haji Sir Omar Ali Saiffuddien. Also present were Deputy Minister of Health Pehin Dato Awg Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, the ministry's permanent secretary, senior officers and staff and health personnel.

With the theme "How Young is Your Heart", the event tackled healthy heart issues and ways to increase the heart's health through good diet, exercise, sufficient rest and releasing stress through relaxation. It also aimed to cultivate family spirit through leisure activities.

There was a march past by Band Serunai & Tambur from Prisons Department, World Heart Day 2006 participants, Mukim Kianggeh Consultative Council and Sports committee members, judges, tug of war teams and PEMODA.

Field activities included a CPR demonstration, a skipping rope demonstration, line dancing, tug of war and fun games.

The public was also able to ride the Big Motorcycle after the march past. There were free health checks, a health exhibition and a lucky draw.

Participants competed in the 50-metre sack race for men; 70-metre-running for men, 45 years above; 50-metre running for women; 70-metre running for men and women 30-years-below; 50-metre tyre rolling and 70-metre relay for a group of two men and two women.

It was jointly organised by the Ministry, Gleneagles JPMC Sdn Bhd and facilitated by the Mukim Kianggeh Consultative Council. The event aimed to inculcate the spirit of healthy living through exercise. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
