Nurses: Healthcare's First Line Of
Defence
By Huraizah Ahmad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Nurses working in health centres, dental clinics and
sections under the Ministry of Health are the `first line of defence'
in healthcare, said Health Minister Pehin Dato Haji Suyoi bin Haji
Osman last Saturday.
It is important for all nurses to
provide professional and quality service in dealing with the high
expectations of patients and their families, he said at a get-together
in conjunction with the International Nurses and Midwives Day 2006.
It was also attended by the Deputy
Health Minister Pehin Dato Awang Haji Hazair bin HajiAbdullah;
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dato Paduka Haji
Serbini Haji Ali and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of
Health, Awang Yusof bin Amba.
Nurses need to be more vigilant on
the specific needs of patients in their care. A proper healthcare
relies on effective treatments given and on the care and assistance
during the medical treatment, he said.
To be a nurse, one has to have strong
dedication and compassion along with an in-depth knowledge on various
diseases to execute the healthcare needed. Quality treatment can be
achieved if nurses practise a more responsible and positive attitude
in handling their duties, be skillful in their communication ability,
implement correct medical procedures, be more knowledgeable, update
knowledge in professional health care and be faithful to religious
teachings, said the minister.
Nurses also need to develop the
confidence of the public in providing quality treatment and services.
More nurses are still needed in professional fields, health screening
and wellness clinics, he added.
This year the strong teamwork by
nurses and midwives have been shown through the various projects
undertaken by the Nursing Services Department.
They include the establishment of the
Counselling Unit for nurses and midwives, printing of prayer books and
a book on procedures of visiting patients for nurse, midwives and the
public, sports activities for nurses and midwives and religious
competitions, said the event chairperson, Pengiran Hajah Azizah binti
Pengiran Haji Tajuddin. Stage performances were presented by the
nurses and midwives. -- Courtesy of Borneo
