Conference Sheds More Light On
Autism

Begawan - The three-day Fourth Brunei National Conference on
Autism 2006 opened yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of Universiti
Brunei Darussalam.
An introduction was delivered by
President of SMARTER Brunei, Malai Hj Abdullah bin Hj Malai Othman,
who explained what autism is and its indicators.
He said that SMARTER Brunei is an
association of parents and family members of autistic individuals. The
association aims to provide emotional support for family members as
well as educational support by opening an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Centre to ensure our children can live meaningful, successful and
independent lives, he said.
"Our curriculum is geared towards the
education because education is teaching them how to live their life.
With this goal, we take into consideration the social, training,
education and psychological milestones of the child's development,"
Malai Hj Abdullah emphasised.
After the introduction, an Asperger
Specialist, Consultant and AuthorAnna Tullemans delivered a talk on
"Telling Others about ASD" followed by another presentation by Rose
Clark on "Understanding Behaviour in those with an Autism Spectrum
