Conference Sheds More Light On Autism
By Sonia K

Bandar Seri Begawan - The three-day Fourth Brunei National Conference on Autism 2006 opened yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

An introduction was delivered by President of SMARTER Brunei, Malai Hj Abdullah bin Hj Malai Othman, who explained what autism is and its indicators.

He said that SMARTER Brunei is an association of parents and family members of autistic individuals. The association aims to provide emotional support for family members as well as educational support by opening an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Centre to ensure our children can live meaningful, successful and independent lives, he said.

"Our curriculum is geared towards the education because education is teaching them how to live their life. With this goal, we take into consideration the social, training, education and psychological milestones of the child's development," Malai Hj Abdullah emphasised.

After the introduction, an Asperger Specialist, Consultant and AuthorAnna Tullemans delivered a talk on "Telling Others about ASD" followed by another presentation by Rose Clark on "Understanding Behaviour in those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder". -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
