Great Show Of Skills At 6th ASC

Bandar Seri Begawan - It was a show of varied skills yesterday as 135 competitors from Asean countries battled it out at the second day of the 6th Asean Skills Competition (ASC), which is unfolding at three venues - the International Convention Centre (IC('), National Indoor Stadium and MTSSR

At the Indoor Stadium, participants demonstrated their abilities in three areas - bricklaying, cabinet-making and welding. The bricklaying event involves 11 competitors from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Brunei participants Muhamad Lutfi bin Hj Tarip and Ak Mohd Ridzwanudin bin Pg Abd Aziz emerged in first and second places respectively during the National Skills Competition held in January this year.

Meanwhile, the cabinet-making competition sees the participation of 13 competitors from Brunei, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Md Ridwan bin Hj Sidek and Abd Aziz bin Hj Masimran are representing Brunei in this competition, which required participants to build a telephone table in an 1 S-hour time frame.

The welding competition sees the participation of 13 competitors from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and

Vietnam.

In this competition, participants are given 18 hours to complete four tasks - production of test plates and pipes, pressure vessels, stainless steel and aluminum structures. Abu Bakar Ali bin Mohammad and Ak Mohammad Ruzaini bin Pg Mohd Jaafar are representing the Sultanate in this contest.

Meanwhile, 13 competitors - from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam - demonstrated their cooking skills at the Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College yesterday.

Preparations began as early as Wednesday and participants have since created interesting dishes such as Terrine of Venison, Brunei River Prawn Salad, Stuffed Quail, Roast lamb, Cream Caramel and chocolate cakes.

According to MTSSR Hospitality and Tourism Department Cookery Coordinator and Head Pg Hj Md Sufri PgAli, the Brunei participants - Dk Yani Mariana bte Pg Yahya and Dyg Sharmita bte Junyang - are bracing themselves for a tough challenge against their Thai counterparts, who were champions in the 2005 World Skills Competition.

To achieve top honours, all participants are required to carry out tasks to perfection in a competition where high pressure and time constraints are a norm. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
