Women's Golf Gaining Popularity
All Over The World
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Golf is becoming a popular sport among women all over
the world, including in Brunei.
This phenomenon is indicated by the'
rise in the number of young women taking up golfing lessons, said two
visiting women professional golfers from Japan, Mika Adaniya and Shiho
Katano.
Adaniya
and Katano are in Brunei to take part in the Mitsubishi Corporation
2006 golf championship, schedule to tee off this weekend at the Empire
Hotel and Country Club. The two women will only compete in the
"nearest to the pin" at hole 10. Being in Brunei gave them the chance
to experience golf on the greens of the Empire Hotel and Country Club.
Katano, 27, began playing golf when
she was only five-years-old, and has been a professional golfer since
1998. Her achievements include winning the Japan Ladies Golf
Association title in 1998, and finishing fourth in the Toikai Classic
Golf Tournament. Katano also played in the USLPGA Tour in 2002 and
2003.
Meanwhile, Adaniya took up the game
at 18 years of age, and turned professional in 1998. Her best
achievement thus far is finishing tenth in the Pro Miss Ladies Golf
Tournament in Japan.
Both golfers are delighted to be able
to participate in the Mitsubishi Corporation 2006 golf championship.
Brunei can boost ladies golf, they said, by first introducing golf to
girls at an early age, and follow up by providing them with facilities
to enjoy the game.
Opening a golf school for ladies in
the country is also a good idea, said the Japanese, as that would give
local women the chance to learn more about golfing. -- Courtesy of Borneo
