Bandar Seri
Begawan - Contestants competing for the first time in the 6"'
Asean Skills Competition were highly impressed with the standard shown
by host country Brunei in adopting the test projects of the 38"h World
Skills Competition held in Helsinki, Finland, in May last year.
Puan
Hjh Rokiah bte Mohd Tahir, a dressmaking expert accompanying two
dressmaking contestants from Malaysia, said she had been to the World
Skills competition and was very comfortable with the venue and
standards set here in Brunei.
The 6th Asean Skills Competition is
being held at two venues in Berakas, namely the International
Convention Centre and the Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium just across
the road.
With additional support from more
than 30 sponsors, the event is arguably one of the most prestigious
competitions in the Asean region.
His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee
Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's
Office officially opened the 6`" Asean Skills Competition yesterday.
The competition proper commences today.
Twelve skill areas are competed this
year, ranging from Automobile Technology to Ladies Dressmaking.
Yesterday all the contestants and
their accompanying experts and instructors were seen surveying their
respective venues and checking their competition equipment to make
sure everything is in order.
Malaysia's Puan Hjh Rokiah bte Mohd
Tahir and her girls Yap Chin Yan, 21, and Siti Khadijah bte-Ramlan,
21, were among the foreign contestants busy getting accustomed to the
competition environment and making final checks on their equipment.
They said they were very satisfied
with the overall arrangement and the standard-of the event, adding
that they were ready to give their best.
Two Indonesian contestants in the
Automobile Technology event, Jaka Mulyadi, 21, and Firdaus, 21, were
also among those busy making last-minute-preparations to make sure
they could do their best at the competition.
"Although the equipment here is
slightly different from what we used back at the training centre in
Indonesia, they are mostly similar. We can grow accustomed to them in
no time," Jaka Mulyadi told the Bulletin.
The two Indonesian automobile
contestants are also among those who are in Brunei for the first time.
Having been in the country for just a short while, Jaka said he was
impressed with the country and with the standard shown at the venue.
Malaysia's Nor Nazaruddin bin Abd
Rahman, 22, who will be competing in the Electronic Applications event
said he was all focused and ready for the event. "It could be a tough
competition but I'll do my very best to make my country proud," he
said. -- Courtesy of Borneo
