Enhancing Nurses' Knowledge In Handling Patients With Heart Problems
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - The seriousness in the increase of cardiac problems among the public was again highlighted yesterday morning following the launching of the 2nd Coronary Care Unit workshop at the Continuing Nursing Education Unit, RIPAS Hospital.

Some 30 nurses throughout the nation turned up for the workshop, which was a continuation from the previous coronary care unit workshop held in September last year.

Present as the guest of honour to launch the workshop was Pengiran Hajah Azizah binti Pengiran Haji Tajuddin, the Director of Nursing.

Organised by the Coronary Care Unit CNE committee in collaboration with the Continuing Nursing Education Unit, the twoday workshop with the theme, "Nursing Management of Patient With Cardiac Problems" is aimed at enhancing nurses' knowledge in the management of patients with cardiac problems particularly in Myocardial Infarction and its drug compliance.

Among the objectives of the workshop are to recognise the importance of ECG changes in Myocardial infarction, discuss the investigations and nursing management of Myocardial Infarction, and the stages of cardiac rehabilitation and others

According to the two chairpersons ofthe organising committee for the workshop, Staff Nurse Hamdillah binti Hj Kula and Staff Nurse Siti Radiah binti Hj Adi, the workshop was organised because nowadays they see the worrying trend of the rising number of patients that are admitted to the coronary care unit due to cardiac problems particularly Myocardial Infarction.

It is disturbing to note that those admitted are young people and this is because of an unhealthy lifestyle of eating habits and very little exercise.

Both staff nurses also revealed that in year 2004, a total of 79 patients with Myocardial Infarction problems were admitted to the Coronary Care Unit while in year 2005, the figure was 69.

In her welcoming speech, the guest of honour said, "Nurses must be prepared to take up extended roles of more challenging practices in nursing. During the era of medical exploration, they (nurses) must equip themselves with adequate up-to-date knowledge on how to give the best care to patients."

She added that effective management of patients who have heart problems should always be further improved especially for nurses who are based in the Coronary Care Unit.

The Director of Nursing also hoped that participating nurses would make good use of the knowledge obtained from the workshop. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
