Major Water Disruption In Tutong,
Brunei Muara
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Homes in the Brunei Muara and Tutong District may
have to make do without water today.
Sources reported that a power
disruption at one of the main water treatment plants in Tutong has
caused its pumps to stop operating. The disruption took place around
5pm yesterday.
Unconfirmed reports said thatthe 66kV
power cables between Pasir Putih and Panapar were the reason behind
the problem of the power outage. Until midnight, a massive effort was
still under way to repair the cables while efforts to find alternative
power supply was on going.
The Borneo Bulletin hotline was also
swamped by complaints from several residents whose taps ran dry.
The Director of Water Services in a
statement said that water supply disruption to the Brunei Muara and
Tutong Districts started from 5.05pm on Wednesday afternoon and is
anticipated to last until today evening.
The interruption was due to a power
failure at the main DES source at Lumut affecting power supply to
major water treatment plants in Bukit Barun, which serves Brunei Muara
District and some parts of the Tutong area. Water supply is expected
to resume to normalcy upon completion of electrical repairs.
The Department of Water Services is
preparing to extend its tanker service, Blue Tanks at strategic
locations and stand pipes to provide water supply.
Blue Tanks will be available at Jalan
Tasek Lama in Brunei Muara and at the Syarikat Kerjasama Tanjung Maya
and Masjid Kampong Layong in Tutong. Stand pipes will be available at
Jalan Tasek Lama, Masjid Serdang, Jalan Kota Batu, Simpang Jalan Tanah
Jambu Kanan in front of Koperasi Persatuan TIBA shop in Brunei Muara
and at the Sg Liang Mosque in Tutong.
Those who require the service of
water tankers within the affected areas may call the department's
hotline 147 or 2223015 or 222428/9 or 2236870/69.
Since tankers are limited, the public
is advised to collect water from the above mentioned strategic
locations of stand pipes and Blue Tanks or from relatives within Jalan
Kota Batu, Mentiri and Bandar areas where water supply will be
available and served from Tasek and Mengkabau Treatment Plan. The
Department said it regrets for the inconvenience caused. -- Courtesy of Borneo
