7-A-Side
By J Klinnsmann
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Trainess of the Projek Ikan Pusu (PIP) - the National
Football Development Programme co-organised by the Department of
Co-Curricular Education and the Football Association of Brunei
Darussalam (BAFA) - continued their dominance in local junior football
when they won the Challenge Trophy in the Muara Vella 7-a-side
tournament in Muara last Sunday.
PIP won the U-18 years title - even
though their players were all under 16 years of age. The Most Valuable
Player award, meanwhile, went to PIP's Mohd Saiful Ariffin bin Hj Adis.
PIP was also Fair Play award winners
in the U- 18 category for their discipline and good behaviour during
the competition. The U-15 title and Fair Play award were also won by
PIP, and that clinched them the Challenge Trophy.
But it was not all one-way PIP
traffic, though: Muara Vella won the U-12 title, by edging out PIP
1-0. According to PIP's chief coach, Hj Omar Hj Jamil, the Muara Vella
win "marks the rise of a good development programme in Muara."
"It is a good and healthy sign. It is
not good for PIP to dominate completely. The boys will learn and
benefit even more from the loss and we will redouble our efforts at
training to meet the challenge," he said.
"PIP can only improve faster if we
lose. There is a silver lining to every cloud. Now that Muara Vella
has.raised the bar, we will respond and so will the other
participating teams. This is great for Brunei j unior football as it
will mean a general rise in standards in the years to come," Hj Omar
said.
The chief guest at the tourney, Hj
Hassan bin Jaluddin, the Ketua Kampong of Serasa and Perpindahan
Serasa Muara, said: "There should be more competition for the children
because development at a young age is important for the future of
Brunei football." -- Courtesy of Borneo
