Spirits High At UBD Convocation
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - Spirits were high and smiles were plastered on the faces of the UBD graduates who yesterday received their doctorate, masters, first degree and diploma at a convocation ceremony held at the UBD Chancellor Hall.

For the 1,072 fresh graduates, it was what some described as `crossing the finish line in the academic pursuit.'

The Bulletin caught up with a few of the graduates to learn of what they have planned for the future.

Mohd Shahrin bin Hj Said - who pursued Bachelors in Education - said he was delighted to have finally completed his studies and that he is grateful to have done so at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The 25-year-old also shared his concerns on the future challenges in store for him with regard to employment. However, Mohd Shahrin believes that the skills he picked up at UBD - i.e. through class presentations and projects - have made him a more adaptable individual today.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old Mohd Faizal Iswandy bin Ali Othman also expressed his happiness at having completed his BA Programme majoring in Geography.

"We should not be choosy. Instead, we should first try to gain experience and develop ourselves," he said.

As for Liyana Abdul Ghani, 23, - who pursued a Bachelors in Education in TESL - the graduation meant that the time had arrived for her to enter the working world, and thus to shoulder more responsibilities.

In her opinion, UBD had prepared her well for her future teaching career. The three-month course allowing them to master the art of teaching was - to her - a valuable lesson indeed.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Assistant Vice Chancellor (UBD Administration and Student Affairs) Dr Hj Mohd Yusop said, "They (the students) need to be innovative and creative, utilising their knowledge to the best of their abilities especially when looking for employment in this competitive world.

"They must be confident and preserve their moral values and good conduct."

He also expressed hopes that the students would use their knowledge gained to contribute to the nation and society for the development of the country.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
