Crown Presents Certificates To 346
Graduates

Begawan - A total of 346 graduates in various fields received
their diplomas and certificates during the afternoon session of the
18°' UBD Convocation ceremony at the UBD Chancellor Hall yesterday.
Earlier in the morning session, His
Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented
certificates to 726 graduates from various fields for their degrees
ranging from Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), Masters to Bachelor
Degrees.
In the afternoon, the ceremony
continued with the presentation of postgraduate certificates, diplomas
and certificates at the Chancellor Hall by His Royal Highness Prince
Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the
Prime Minister's Office who is also the ProChancellor of UBD.
The ceremony began with the National
Anthem, followed by a speech from HRH the Crown Prince to mark the
18th UBD Convocation.
There were 1,072 students who
graduated this year including 46 international students from Maldives,
Indonesia, Singapore, Kosovo, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Britain,
Malaysia, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and Bosnia.
In a short interview after the
convocation ceremony, a recipient of Diploma in Islamic Law and Legal
Practice, Norhijradini bte Hj Saidi, who did her Bar in Cardiff, told
the Bulletin the importance of attaining such a diploma.
She was one of the postgraduates or
in-service graduates. Currently she works as a legal council at the
Attorney General Chamber.
She said Islamic law is gaining more
importance.
Compared to English law, the Islamic
law has marked differences. Basically, she said English law is coded
or written and usually took precedence over cases, whereas Islamic law
follows the strict Syariah law.
When asked how she had managed to
work and study at the same time, she said it was a challenge that
impacted her positively.
Mohd
Halizam Hj Asli was one of this year's postgraduates receiving a
Diploma in Secondary Ugama. Previously, he studied at Al-Azhar
University in Egypt.
In an interview, lie said studying in
UBD and overseas was different. He said he actually preferred to study
here because UBD offers a more focused and `systematic' approach to
teaching, which according to him was more arranged.
He told the Bulletin that after
taking the PGCE, he now feels more confident in teaching. He said now
he knows how to teach better than before. He believes that a teacher
must know a student's background and capability first before teaching
him/her. In that way, a teacher could teach more efficiently and
effectively.
This year, eight received Diploma in
Islamic Law and Legal Practice, 140 Post-Graduate Certificate of
Education, three Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling, 29 Diploma in
Education (in service), 94 Diploma in Primary Education, eight
Certificate in Lower Secondary Science Education, 26 Certificate in
Technical Education, 10 Certificate in Special Education, nine
Certificate in Counselling, 12 Certificate in Early Childhood and
