Call To Conserve ‘Bloodline Of
Modern Living’
By Huraizah Ahmad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The uncertainty of energy supply, including sources
of supply and duration of the limited resource, has underlined its
role as the `bloodline of modern living', which without everything
will be at a standstill.
This was stated by Minister of Energy
at the Prime Minister's Office, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya
bin Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, during the opening ceremony of a seminar
on `Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Conservations (PROMEEC)', for
buildings in Southeast Asia. The seminar was held at the Civil Service
Institute in Rimba.
In view of this uncertain supply, the
significance of energy specifically `energy efficiency and
conservation', has taken a central and crucial role. Here energy audit
and government entities play a very important and exemplary role in
efforts to conserve and use energy efficiently, the minister added.
. Energy audit refers to the
assessment of energy consumption in an organisation in treating any
energy problem. It includes collecting data from bills and meters,
undertaking surveys on equipment and buildings, and collecting
information from personnel in order to identify factors in enhancing
an organisation's operating efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Presenting papers at the seminar were
Executive Director Asean Centre of Energy (ACE), Dr Weeraway
Chantanakome, and General Manager of Energy Conservation Centre of
Japan (ECCJ), Mr Yoshitaka Ushio.
Mr Yoshitaka Ushio spoke on Japan's
role in providing financial support and willingness to dispatch their
experts to Asean countries for energy audits and seminars conducted by
ACE.
Participants of the seminar, which
opened yesterday and will run till September 9, comprise officials
from the Department of Electrical Services, Building Services Public
Works Department, Housing Development at the Ministry of Development,
Petroleum Unit and Ministry of Health as well as private agencies.
Working papers on Energy Conservation
Management and Technology and Audit Assessments will be presented
throughout the seminar by experts from the Japan Energy Conservation
Centre (ECCJ).
The ACE is responsible for
accelerating integration of energy strategies within Asean by
providing relevant information, including technology and expertise, to
ensure that over the long-term, necessary energy development policies
and programmes are in harmony with economic growth and environmental
sustainability of the region. -- Courtesy of Borneo
