Committee Set Up To Review Higher
Learning Institutions
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam yesterday announced the establishment of a National
Committee at the Cabinet Ministers' level to review and update the
nations' higher learning institutions.
|
His Majesty, who is also the
Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, said this in a titah
during the 18" UBD Convocation held at the Chancellor Hall
yesterday.
Accompanying His Majesty was His
Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and
Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.
His Majesty again stressed the
need to setup an Islamic higher learning centre in the country.
"As we are aware, the higher
education sector plays an integral role in building civilisation
and the nation's economy," said the monarch.
Understanding this need, the
Ministry of Education is currently reviewing the country's
education system that is from the lower primary to the secondary
level to ensure its quality, His Majesty said.

"In line with the current needs,
reviewing the tertiary education sector again is vital in gauging
the level of achievement of our higher learning institutions."
These efforts are the demand of
the global world, said the monarch, and added that this can be
characterised as reformation towards updating it to a multipurpose
higher learning system.
His Majesty said, a National
Committee to scrutinise higher learning institutions at the
Cabinet Ministers' level has been set up and this committee will
evaluate the development and achievement of this sector and will
also identify its direction.
"The committee will shape a
comprehensive strategy which hopefully will place the sector at a
more established level. |
"The higher learning institutions
must have a reputation which can provide valuable examples as well as
quality education by having different types of education that can
produce successful students capable of bringing changes.
"We always hope and stress that the
graduates have a wider knowledge and skills that are marketable," said
His Majesty. This, besides being important for the graduates
themselves, is also anticipated by employers, professional
organisations, the labour market and the community, added the ruler.
Touching on the establishment of an
Islamic higher learning centre, His Majesty said that this has been
mentioned for the third time. Even though it is the responsibility of
the committee to study this, it cannot be used as an excuse to delay
it, His Majesty added.
Though the education centre that will
be set up may look unglamorous from the outside, it must achieve the
country's aspiration to build a generation of Muslims that are
knowledgeable and with noble characteristics.
"Understandably, there are some
shortcomings but these can also act as a strong motivation towards
greater efforts.
"What is worrying us is time moves
very fast and it will overtake us while we sit still," the monarch
said.
His Majesty once again stressed that
our aim is to establish a pure Islamic higher learning centre, which
can become a landmark in the world.
His Majesty later consented to
present degrees to 726 graduates from various fields.
The highlight of the convocation was
the awarding of an Honorary Doctor of Literature from UBD to the Crown
Prince that was presented by His Majesty. --
