Reactions Still Mixed Over Shift
To New Trading Location
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The 72 fish vendors who have been relocated to the
Gadong fish market a month ago are still having mixed feelings over
their new trading venue.
They were relocated after their old
trading location at Pasar Tambing in the capital was demolished to
make way for a new development project.
Some of the fish traders said they
did not have good business since they moved to the new location as
they have to compete with the existing vendors who have been operating
at the Gadong fish market for many years. Others said they are having
better luck in the new trading area.
"Our customers are mainly people from
the water villages. Some of them do not want to come here, maybe
because it costs more for them to take boatrides to Gadong," the
relocated vendors said.
However, some fish sellers who are
occupying strategic locations at the Gadong fish market said they are
enjoying better business in the new trading area.
"However, we have to lower our prices
as we need to compete with other fish traders," they said.
The relocated fish vendors were
placed at a location at the fish market which was formerly occupied by
chicken and meat vendors who have been moved to another place which
was once used as a fish storage area next to the fish market.
Some dwellers of water villages said
they now have to drive their cars to Gadong fish market to get their
daily needs after the closure of Pasar Tambing. However, some old
folks said they still buy fish from vendors who sell their products
from boats at Sungai Kianggeh.
"It costs us more to go to Gadong by
boat. So we still go to the capital by boat and get our fish from
vendors who sell them on boats," they said. Other dwellers said they
are so used to shop for their kitchen needs in the capital that they
will not go to Gadong to get their daily necessities. -- Courtesy of Borneo
