Swoop On Kg Ayer For Drugs
By Lyna Mohammad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The government machinery continues to spread
awareness on the dangers of drug abuse but it remains a concern for
authorities as many refuse to heed their advice.
Kampong Ayer has always been one of
the drug hotspots in the country.
To ensure that the famed water
village and its surroundings are not turned into a nest for drug abuse
activities, a team of 79 law enforcers from the Narcotics Control
Bureau conducted an operation last week, the second such exercise in
two weeks.
Two operations in two weeks in the
same area just shows how serious the NCB is in trying to rid the
country of drug abusers and pushers. Both the operations were
conducted following complaints made by the public.
The bureau said it has been able to
identify areas believed to be still active in drug abuse activities.
The bureau said it would continue to carry out surveillance and
simultaneously promote awareness among the public on the dangers of
abusing drugs.
The operation began at 3.30pm and
continued until l am.
Nine locals, including a woman,
suspected of their involvement in drug abuse activities, were taken to
the NCB headquarters for questioning. The suspects are in the age
group of 19 to 38 years.
Four of the suspects were later
released after their urine samples tested negative for drugs. The
other five tested positive for drugs and have been detained for
further investigation.
The bureau asked the public to
continue to extend their support and cooperation in providing
information and assistance to the bureau to help the country free of
drugs.
Any drug abuse related information
can be passed on to the bureau by calling 2448877 during office hours
and 8777444 after office hours. -- Courtesy of Borneo
