Olympic organizers launch 'smile'
campaign in Beijing
Beijing -
Organizers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics called on the Chinese
capital's residents to flash their smiles in a bid to make the city
more attractive to visitors in two years' time.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for
the 2008 Olympics urged Beijing residents to take part in a "smile"
campaign and to work on improving their manners, Xinhua news agency
reported.
"We hope Beijing residents will join
in the smile campaign to turn the city into a city of smile," Liu Jian,
one of the committee members, was quoted as saying on Monday.
"For many people who will not be
volunteers, they are expected to show their good manners and do what
they can to make the city a better place," Liu said.
With the international event only two
years away, concerns about the "quality of the people" are frequently
raised -- an issue which refers to rude behaviors such as spitting,
queue-jumping and littering.
To address the concern, Beijing's
government has this year distributed 1.5 million copies of "A General
Textbook on Civility and Propriety", which aimed at teaching people
good manners. --
