3rd National Youth Sports Fest
Opens

Begawan - The 3rd National Youth Sports Festival 2006 (Pesta
Sukan Remaja) was launched yesterday by Minister of Culture, Youth and
Sports Pehin Mejar Jeneral (B) Dato Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud
at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with six contingents
competing.
The Chairman of the 3rd PSR 2006
Committee, Awang Haji Matassim bin Haji Jibah, said the Department of
Youth and Sports is hoping through this 3' National Youth Sports
Festival, the competition can extract new talents that can be worked
on and expanded to a more prestigious sporting level.
He delivered a message to the
participating athletes on the misuse of drugs in sports such as
steroids and E.P.O (Erythropoietin).
He said WADA or known as World
Anti-Doping Agency is a world body responsible for the coordination
and monitoring of 'antidoping' issues.
For this year's edition, the Royal
Bru ei Armed Forces Sports Council and the
Sports School are the two new
additions,to the four contingents from the four districts, Brunei
Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong District.
The Tutong district are sending the
biggest contingent size for this year made up of 277 athletes and
officials, followed by the Belait district with 269, Brunei Muara with
264, Temburong with 210, RBAF Sports Council with 165 and the Brunei
Sports School with 108 representatives.
The Department of Youth and Sports of
the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports
organised
the event coordinated by the Brunei Darussalam National Sports
Associations.
The 13 sporting events to be
contested from Sept 1-10 are badminton, netball, basketball,
volleyball, football, futsal, hockey, karate do, cycling, athletics,
pencak silat, ping pong and sepak takraw.
Yesterday's opening ceremony began
with a march past from the participating contingents led by the Royal
Brunei Police Force Band.
A sports pledge was also read after
the guest of honour officially opened the games.
Local artist Lo Ryder sang the Pesta
Sukan Remaja theme song.
There was a field performance and an
acrobatic-cheerleading performance by the PDS International School.
The first edition of the PSR games in
2002 saw Brunei Muara District as the champions, having collected 31
gold medals, 19 silvers and 12 bronze followed by Tutong in second
with eight gold, nine silver and 17 bronze. Third and fourth places
were occupied by the Belait and Tutong District.
It was the same order again in the
2nd PSR in 2004. The Brunei Muara District retained the championship
title, after bagging 34 gold, 21 silver and seven bronzes.
Tutong
District, Belait District and Temburong District followed in second,
