By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - New members of the Neighbourhood Crime Watch have
been called to abide by the rules and guidelines and not to follow
their personal feelings.
They are advised to refer to the
Neighbourhood Crime Watch committee or the police, in particular Head
of PRO of RBPF in their capacity as the secretary, should they
encounter any doubts or problems.
This was stated by Acting Supt Pg
Mohd Roslin Pa Hj Bakar, Head of Public Relations Unit of RBPF, in his
speech at the presentation of badges for 19 new members of the Kg
Subok Neighbourhood Crime Watch group.
The guest of honour also presented
Appreciation in Fighting Crime certificates to seven of the
recipients.
Conveying his congratulatory message
to recipients of the appreciation certificates, he noted that the
force is proud to see the recipients' commitment to work together with
the police force in safekeeping the nation's peace.
This, he added, was through their
awareness on the responsibility as a citizen that possesses
responsibility and authority allocated in the Criminal Procedure Code
under Section 32.
Under this section, members of the
public are given the authority to apprehend anyone executing criminal
activities right under their nose.
The neighbourhood crime watch group
was first introduced in 1989 where since then, it has received an
encouraging response with the number of members to date totalling up
to 10,000. Now, almost every village in the country has its own
Neighbourhood Crime Watch group.
The setting up of the Neighbourhood
Crime Watch Group is aimed at promoting awareness and opportunity for
villagers to inculcate and uphold the spirit of neighbourhood that has
long been practiced.
Meanwhile, the objectives of this
Neighbourhood Crime Watch are among others, to assist neighbours in
looking after their residence and the serenity of its occupants,
practice the respectful attitude towards each other and cultivate
understanding and goodwill and cooperate with the village head in
upholding the village's peace and its surroundings.
The guest of honour also hoped that
Kg Subok Neighbourhood Crime Watch will continue to be active and set
an example for other similar groups. -- Courtesy of Borneo
