12 Strokes Of The Cane For Night Time Robber
By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 26-year-old local was found guilty on a charge of robbery and sentenced to five years in prison and twelve strokes of the cane Thursday.

Noorazmi bin Sariang @ Lampoh had earlier denied a charge of having committed extortion on an Indonesian' labourer in the vicinity of Kg Manggis 1 on November 25, 2005 at about 10pm and induced the victim to hand over $700, a mobile phone, a SIM card in the mobile phone and an EASI recharge card.

The charge further stated that the defendant in committing the extortion, had voluntarily caused fear of instant hurt to the victim, classified as an offence of robbery.

The prosecution, conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ng, produced 12 witnesses to prove the charge against the defendant is beyond reasonable doubt.

In passing sentence, Judge Hairolarni Hj Abd Majid stated the offence of robbery is serious and the sentence would also be quite serious to reflect the severity of the offence and to promote deterrence.

Prosecution stated that the incident took place at night when the defendant, who was driving his car, spotted the victim who had just bought an EASI recharge card from a nearby shop and assumed he was an easy target.

The defendant then drove near the victim who was walking and grabbed his arm through the dar window. He then pointed a knife at the victim's right abdomen.

On seeing that the victim had frozen in fear, the defendant reached into the victim's shirt pocket and took all the abovementioned items and sped off. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
