By Dannie Abu Basrah

Bandar Seri Begawan - Despite windy conditions, the First Empire Amateur Open Golf Championship got off to a good start yesterday at the Empire Hotel and Country Club golf courses, involving 103 golfers who will be competing for three days tournament for the top honour.

According to the tournament secretary Pg Abd Rahman Pg Hj Tuah, Assistant Club House Manager of the Empire Hotel and Country Club, the tournament is sponsored by ,the Empire Hotel and Country Club itself, Baiduri Bank and NBT (Brunei) Sdn Bhd.

The tournament is opened only to golfers with a handicap of 15 and below, with the aim of promoting golf in the country, said by Pg Abd Rahman.

PgAbd Rahman named national players Seruji Hj Setia, Pg Adam and Hj Suhaimi Ibrahim as among the favourites to win, having a slightly better edge because of their experience. But he added that anything can happen in golf, especially in a challenging course like the ones at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The participating golfers represent various golf clubs, said Pg Abd Rahman, the highest number of entries coming from the Pantai Mentiri Golf Club, followed by the Royal Brunei Golf Club, the Panaga Golf Club, as well as some Royal Brunei Armed Forces golfers and representatives from the Empire itself.

Ten percent of the golfers are made up of juniors. The eventual winner will receive prizes such as the challenge trophy, the winner's trophy, a free trip to Saigon in Vietnam and one-year free membership, to name a few. Other prizes to be won include a 3-day/2-night stay at the Empire Hotel Executive Suite and night stays at the Junior Suite, Deluxe room and Superior room.

Baiduri Bank meanwhile sponsored four junior golfers under the age of 17 to compete in the tournament namely Edwin Ho, Amalul Haji Abdul Rahman, Bryant Chiew and Khairul Kamis. The bank is also sponsoring umbrellas and caps for all the other participants.

The sponsorship for the four juniors was handed over on Thursday at the Empire Hotel and Country Club by Baiduri Bank's Senior Deputy General Manager, Raymond Bariou. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
