Orientation Course On Brunei Laws
To Be Held At Philippine Embassy
By Tony Alabastro
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A basic orientation course on Brunei's labour and
immigration laws, workmen's insurance and compensation, and other
workers' welfare and protection matters will be conducted over two
Sundays at the Philippine Embassy.
The Philippine Embassy said it has
invited Labour and Immigration Department officials to present the
talk on Sept 7 and Sept 10, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The talk is open to
overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Meanwhile, a noted private law
practitioner will speak on workmen's insurance and compensation, the
embassy said. The basic orientation course aims to enhance the
knowledge and understanding of OFWs on labour, immigration and other
laws of Brunei, said Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Virginia H
Benavidez.
The basic orientation course will be
beneficial for OFWs in upgrading their knowledge of and familiarity
with the whole spectrum of prevailing rules and regulations as well as
their rights, privileges and services, in connection with their
employment in Brunei, Ambassador Benavidez added.
The course will also tackle various
services provided to OFWs by the Philippine Embassy and other
concerned agencies.
There are 22,997 Filipinos living in
Brunei, including 2,038 dependents. Majority are semi-skilled workers
(35 per cent) and house workers (27 per cent), while others are
skilled workers (12 per cent) and unskilled and professionals, the
Embassy said.
The Embassy's welfare assistance
programme helped 443 workers from Jan to June 2006, who were given
back wages and other benefits, and plane and ferry tickets totalling
$113,255.04. In 2005, 774 workers were assisted and total back wages,
benefits and plane and ferry tickets totalled $258, 031 the newsletter
said. -- Courtesy of Borneo
