New Security Feature For Brunei Passports
By MK Anwar

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Immigration and National Registration Department yesterday announced that starting October 1, 2005, it would be introducing a new feature for Brunei passports.

The photos of applicants will be digitised and printed directly on the data page of their respective passports. Previously, photos of applicants were pasted on their passports.

The new feature is aimed at improving and complimenting further security features that already exist on Brunei passports issued by the department.

The use of digitised photos on passports will prevent acts of photo substitutions by any irresponsible parties.

The department informed the public that the changes would not affect the current fee or requirements for passport applications. Brunei passports that have been issued previously would remain valid.

Meanwhile, current Brunei passport holders who wish to visit the United States of America are advised to change their passports to the new version that uses the digital photo to avoid applying for a visa to enter the country.

The department has also advised those who wish to go abroad, especially during the coming school holidays, to ensure that their travel documents or passports have a validity period of not less than six months. All passports must also have adequate number of free pages available for entry and re-entry endorsements at Immigration Control Posts either in Brunei or abroad.

For those who would like to apply or renew their passports, they are advised to forward their applications early to the department to prevent any inconvenience. According to the department, the number of applications for passports or travel documents rises during school holidays.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
