Charge! Grand Sale Kicks Off
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Consumer Price Index which measures the changes
of prices of goods and services in the country in the past few years
stands at only around one percent and is considered one of the lowest
in the region.
|
This was highlighted by the Acting
Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, Hj Kamis Hj
Tamin, chief guest at the official launching of the 2005 Brunei
Grand Sale (BGS) yesterday.
In his speech, he noted that
retailers must realise the need to be more competitive and at the
same time be honest to customers. Realising this is the only way
that each retailer can develop and last long.
Hj Kamis said the Brunei Grand
Sale in a way has contributed to the stabilisation of prices
especially for consumer goods. This stabilisation of prices is a
healthy economic indicator that can encourage the development of
other economic activities. He noted that the revenue from the
Wholesale and Retail Sector has shown an increase of more than
five percent since 2000 and has doubled in 2004.
He added that the Wholesale and
Retail Trade Sector is one of the main contributors to the Gross
Domestic Product of the country after the Oil and Gas Sector. For

2004 the whole of the sector
contributed nearly eight percent to the GDP, impressive for the
non-oil and gas sector.
According to the 2002 Economic
Census Report published by JPKE, a total of 1,487 enterprises
consist of retailers in the Wholesale and Retail Sector and it is
one of the biggest employers in the private sector in the country.
A total of 16,400 people are being employed in this sector, said
the Acting Permanent Secretary. |
The Deputy Director General of the
Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), Hj Razali Md.
Yussof meanwhile said that the BGS enlivens the atmosphere every year
with eye-catching sales and promotion.
A total of 342 outlets has registered
to take part in the 2005 BGS with 80 more outlets still getting their
applications processed. Besides the BGS launching, the Local Product
Festival is also being held at the Hua Ho Mall.
The Deputy Director General said that
more than 40 companies producing local products are taking part. The
good response shows that strategy to hold the Local Product Fair
during the BGS is most appropriate, explains Hj Razali.
Shortly after launching the BGS, the
chief guest toured the booths of the local companies taking part in
the Local Product Fair. The BGS, organised by JPKE is the 11th of its
kind and will run for 52 days up to the first week of Hari Raya.
This year it comes with the theme
appropriately called "Bargain prices to boost sales and hence,
economic growth". BGS 2005 participants are required to display the
BGS banner at their business premises and certificates issued by JPKE
should be displayed conspicuously for the benefit of the shoppers to
identify BGS 2005 participants. --
